Approximately 650,000 positions will open up across all industries by the end of 2020, with about 24,000 roles opening in the Commercial Trades. Due to slowing pipeline growth, the 7-county metro anticipates a 3-year construction talent shortage of between 600 and 2,750 workers, including occupations such as pipefitters, carpenters, operating engineers, and supervisors. Mid and high-level skills are most in-demand. Approximately 13.3% of the 7-county metro area is a member of a union, compared to 10.7% of the nation overall. In some metro zip codes, union membership is as high as 28% (55372) and 31% (55417).
